Description

This portrait of Karl Bolander appeared in the January 7, 1941 issue of the “Crowley Post-Signal” (Crowley, Louisiana), accompanying an article titled “Hobby Specialist will speak here.” The image is a reproduction of a black-and white headshot of Bolander, who wears a suit and tie and faces the camera with a neutral expression on his face. 

Bolander served as the director of the Columbus Museum of Art, then called the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, from 1926 to 1932. His tenure spanned the construction and completion of the Museum building, from 1928-1931. He lived in Worthington during this time, relocating to Florida in 1953. According to his obituary, published in the August 1, 1976 “Orlando Sentinel,” Bolander worked for Scholastic Magazine for over 50 years, and was a principal in founding the Winter Park Sidewalk Arts Festival, one of the oldest and most prestigious outdoor arts festivals in the U.S. Throughout his career, Bolander traveled widely, speaking on the arts and the importance of hobbies.
