Photograph of Vincent, Joseph and Vasa Canzani from the Columbus Dispatch

Description

This black-and-white reproduction of a photo of Vincent and his parents, Joseph and Vasa Canzani, originally appeared in the March 13, 1955 "Columbus Dispatch," accompanying an article by Colleen Kocher titled "'Barrel Dress' Ignores Wind, Hugs the Knee." It depicts Vincent, age three, kneeling in profile at a low table and looking down at a large sketch of skirts. Across from him, Joseph and Vasa also kneel and regard the sketch, with all three of them drawing on it. Behind them is a low chair, and they seem to be in a living room. The caption at the bottom reads, "Joseph Canzani helps his wife, Vasa, work out details for a dress which combines the good points of a straight skirt and full skirt. Their little boy, Vinci, 3, looks on admiringly. Mr. Canzani suggested the dress after hearing his wife complain about full skirts."

The article describes a dress designed by Joseph Canzani after hearing Vasa complain about her skirt billowing up on windy days. According to the article, the couple designed clothes as a hobby. Joseph was at that time president of the Columbus Art School, now Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD), and Vasa was a former art teacher. Vincent would go on to study at CCAD, as well as serve in the U.S. Navy from 1980-86.
