Background
This is an excerpt of Philander Chase's autobiography. St. John's received its first rector, Philander Chase in 1817. In his autobiography, he recounts his arduous travels to Ohio, with excerpts from letters. He describes his missionary efforts, the founding of the Episcopal Church in Ohio, his plans for a seminary and his economic difficulties. Chase also headed the Worthington Academy and the parishes of Trinity in Columbus and St. Peter's in Delaware. He was named the first Bishop of Ohio in 1818. After leaving St. John's in 1822 he began work on the seminary that ultimately became Kenyon College.
