Ellen Gloyd and Lawrence Long Sitting Outside with Animals
Description
This sepia-tinted, black-and-white photograph shows two white children sitting outside holding animals. On the left, Ellen Gloyd, nine or ten years old at the time of the photo, embraces a chicken on her lap and looks at the camera with a proud expression. She has short, light hair that appears to be cut into a bob with bangs, and is wearing a long-sleeved, knee-length dress, tights, and boots. On the right, Lawrence Long, seven or eight years old at the time of the photo, smiles at the camera and holds a relaxed, sleeping cat on his lap. He has short, light-colored hair and wears a peacoat. Both children are squinting slightly, as though looking into the sun. In front of them, a large dog sits with ears perked and looks at the camera. The children are sitting on a wooden bench or edge of what might be a raised bed garden. Behind them, another chicken can be seen as well as a large lawn, what might be a wooden sawhorse, four buildings and trees without leaves.
Ellen Gloyd attended The Ohio State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1932, having been elected as a member of Scholaris, which was a freshman women’s honorary society. She lived at 119 East Dublin-Granville Road.
Lawrence Long was the son of William (Carl) and Caroline Vest Long, and cousin of Ellen Gloyd.
