Elmer Caldwell Pictured in Fort Leavenworth Yearbook
Description
This black-and-white portrait photograph shows Elmer Caldwell in military uniform, as pictured in the 1957 annual picture book of graduates of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He is shown in a one-quarter headshot, looking at the photographer with a light smile. To the left of the photo is the text: "Elmer I. Caldwell/Major, Artillery/Elmer and May/Harold, Curtis/621 Morning Street/Worthington, Ohio." Elmer lived at this address with his wife, May Caldwell (née Wing), and sons Harold and Curtis.
Caldwell was born in a log cabin in Greenwood, West Virginia. He served in World War II in North Africa, Anzio, Monte Casino, Northern Italy, Southern France and Germany, as well as in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War (Mekon Delta). He returned to Vietnam as State Department US AID.
Caldwell's son, Curtis, shared of the graduating class of 1957: "It was during this year long course beginning in 1956 of the Command and General Staff College that the events of the Hungarian Revolution occurred [23 OCT 1956 - 04 NOV 1965]. The graduating class of 1957 of CGSC became the battalion commanders in Europe during the tense years that followed. Students in this class were the junior officers during World War Two and the Korean War. They already had first hand experience in real combat."
