Background
This black-and-white portrait of Harold E. Caldwell accompanied an article in the June 18, 1959 "Worthington News" titled "Former Resident is West Point Appointee." The portrait shows him smiling at the camera and dressed in Boy Scout uniform.
The article notes that he had received a presidential appointment to West Point, and would report there on July 7, 1959. He was a graduate of Nuremberg High School in Germany where his father, Elmer Caldwell, was serving in the armed forces.
As further noted by the article, "He is an Eagle Scout, an Explorer Scout and belongs to the Order of the Arrow. He was a member of the track team at Nuremberg and engaged in other athletic activities while in school.
"He will visit his grandparents, Mrs. Charles Caldwell of Marietta, Ohio, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. [Harriet] Wing of 621 Morning St. before reporting to West Point."
A Worthington native, Harold Caldwell graduated from West Point in 1963. According to his obituary, he “was commissioned as 2nd Lt., United States Army. He served our country throughout the Vietnam War and continued his military career until 1978. Major Caldwell was a Master Parachutist. He served as an Industrial Engineer with the military contractor, Lockheed Martin in Uniondale, Long Island for thirty years, retiring in 2008.”
He was awarded the Soldier's Medal as well as the Bronze Star three times. Officially, it is one award of the Bronze Star and Two Oak Leaf Clusters, with each Oak Leaf Cluster representing an additional award.
