Hiram Wayne Harshfield, age 80, 192 Erie Rd., Columbus, Ohio, died Saturday, July 20, 1979 at University Hospital. Professor Emeritus Cooperative Extension Service, Ohio State University. Professor Harshfield joined the University in 1936 as Assistant State 4 H Club Leader, becoming State Club Leader in 1954, from which position he retired in 1961. Prior to coming to Ohio State, Mr. Harshfield served as High School Principal in Independence, Ohio and as a Teacher in Cleveland Heights High School. Mr. Harshfield was a 59 year member of North Broadway United Methodist Church, Delta Theta Sigma, Epsilon Sigma Phi, Phi Delta Kappa and Gamma Sigma Delta. He was a member of the Faculty Club and Maennerchor of Columbus. Survived by wife, Eleanore Barlow Harshfield; son, Stanley Wayne Harshfield of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter, Louise Harshfield Betsch of Highland, Illinois; stepson, John A. Barlow of Longview, Washington; sister, Della Baker of Columbus; brother, Gerald S. Harshfield of Brooking, S.D.; 9 grandchildren. Friends wishing to, may contribute to the American Cancer Society or a charity of their choice in Professor Harshfield's honor. Funeral service Monday 11 a.m. Weir-Arend Funeral Home, 4221 N. High Street, where family will receive friends Sunday 7-9 p.m. and one hour prior to service. Interment Walnut Grove Cemetery, Rev. William T. Tolliver officiating.
