Jan Batchelor (Collins) Maher, age 64, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2011 following her graceful struggle with early onset dementia for more than 10 years. Affectionately known during these last years as “Momma J,” she was born November 3, 1946 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Jan will be deeply missed by Dan, her husband of 41 years; her sons, Chris, Colin (Lyndsay) and Clay; her daughter, Courtney; her grandsons, Gage, Styles and Hudson; her mother, Ada Collins; and her brother, Jeff (Barbara) Collins. She was predeceased by her father, David C. Collins. Jan received her BA in Education from Oglethorpe University in 1969 and her Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Virginia in 1970. She enthusiastically devoted her entire adult life to children, teaching at the elementary school level for five years in Albemarle County, Virginia and Worthington, Ohio before retiring from teaching to devote herself to the rearing of her four children. She was active in Children’s Hospital Twigs, and in Worthington Songsters (including serving as the organization’s president) through which she was able to satisfy her passion for singing. She enjoyed the many family opportunities for swim team, golf, and other activities at Brookside Golf & Country Club. The family would like to extend their special thanks to the caring staffs at the Gerlach Center, at Mill Run Garden & Care Center, and at HomeReach Hospice for their devoted and loving care of Jan in her final years. Calling hours will be held from 4-7pm on Sunday, August 7, 2011 at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High Street, Worthington, OH 43085. A memorial service will be held at 11am at Worthington Presbyterian Church, 773 N. High Street, Worthington, OH 43085 on Monday, August 8, 2011. Pastor Jeffrey DeYoe officiating.
