June Ann Reiss McBrayer
June was born on December 2, 1936, in Belleville, IL, to William George Reiss and Anita Theresa Hesse. June grew up in nearby Cahokia, IL until her junior year in college, when her parents moved back to Belleville. She graduated from Cahokia High School in 1954, Washington University in St. Louis (B.A. in Mathematics and Education) in 1958, and St. Louis University (M.A.) in 1965.
June met James D. McBrayer at church one morning in 1955. It took Jim a while to convince June to marry him, but they were married at Union United Methodist Church in Belleville on August 2, 1958. They lived in St. Louis until 1962, with June teaching ninth grade mathematics. In 1962 June and Jim moved to Brussels, Belgium, where Jim attended graduate school and June worked part time in the office at the school. They returned to St. Louis in August 1963, where their "Brussel Sprout" Kenneth was born in February 1964, followed by Timothy in 1966 and Theresa (Tammy) in 1968.
June and family lived in Fayette, Missouri from 1974 to 1977, and then in Worthington, Ohio from 1977 to 1990. During these times she taught and tutored mathematics in the local public schools while keeping up with her children's busy schedules. The family went through a time of struggle when June's older son, Ken, was diagnosed with leukemia. He passed away as a result of his illness in 1984. After Tim and Tammy graduated from college in 1990, June and Jim moved to Oviedo, FL. They were charter members of University Carillon United Methodist Church where June remained active in the church through the end of her life.
June deeply loved her husband, children and grandchildren, and cat. She enjoyed playing handbells, participating in bible studies, and teaching math. After her stroke in 2016 June remained devoted to her Lord and continued touching the lives of many of those around her.
June went to be with her Lord on Monday September 30, 2019 in the presence of her husband Jim and her children Tim and Tammy. She is also survived by her grandchildren Katherine and Rebecca McBrayer, and Zachary, Alexandra, and Lucas Atkinson.
A service will be at University Carillon United Methodist Church Saturday, October 12
