OBERLEITNER PFC Branden Frederick Oberleitner, age 20, was killed in Fallujah, Iraq on June 5th, 2003, while returning from a day patrol. Branden served as a Radio Telephonic Operator (RTO) with the 1st Platoon of Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion of the 502nd Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Air Assault Division. His unit had actively participated in Iraqi Freedom and were soon to have been returning to Ft Campbell, KY. Branden was born on June 18th, 1982 in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Worthington. He attended Wilson Hill Elementary, Kilborne Middle School and was a 2001 graduate of Thomas Worthington High School. During his Junior and Senior years, he was enrolled in the Firefighting program at Delaware JVS, North. Prior to his enlistment in January, 2002, he had received his Volunteer Firefighters License and EMT certification which allowed him to assist his company's medic. Branden served an internship with Upper Arlington Fire Department. He is survived by his mother, Iris Oberleitner; father, Frank F. Carmack Jr.; brothers, Lawrence Oberleitner, Andrew Carmack and sister, Grace Carmack, all of Worthington; his maternal grandparents, Bruno and Dora Fassler of New Richmond, Ohio and Kurt Oberleitner of St. Gallen, Switzerland; and his paternal grandparents, Frank and Jenny Carmack Sr. of Roanoke, Virginia. Branden's maternal aunts and uncles, Alexandra Steiger of New Richmond, Ohio, Shannon Fassler of Cologne, Germany; uncles, Roman, Orsen and Cameron Fassler, all of New Richmond; paternal aunt and uncle, Jean and Bob Elliot of Blue Ridge, Virginia; maternal cousins, Nicolas, Hunter and Lilly Hedrick of New Richmond; paternal, Christopher Sieger of Blue Ridge, Virginia. There will be a scholarship fund established in his name, for donations in lieu of flowers. Funeral Service 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 High St., Worthington, Ohio. Military service to follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Family will receive friends 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Monday at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 515 High St., Worthington, Ohio. "He now belongs to the ages."
