Capt. Skeele Dead
Worthington Veteran Dies in Dayton at Age of Eighty-seven
With the death of Capt. John C. Skeele, which occurred at Dayton last week, Worthington lost one of its few remaining veterans of the Civil War. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the residence of Capt. Skeele’s son, Philip S. Skeele, in Marble Cliff and interment was made in Walnut Grove cemetery.
Besides a widow, Mrs. Harriet Skeele, of South Hartford street, two sons, John M. Skeele of Columbus and Philip S. Skeele of Marble Cliff and two daughters, Miss May E. Skeele of California and Mrs. W. E. Capron of Minneapolis, survive. Mr. Skeel was 87 years old. He was born in Penna and moved to Worthington with his parents in early childhood.
Capt. Skeele enlisted in 1862 and served as first sergeant of Company C. He was promoted to second lieutenant, also assisting as quartermaster for a year. Later he acted as captain of Company D. He fought in the battle of Chicamauga and was with General Sherman on his historic march to the sea. George Pingree saw service with Capt. Skeele and recalls many personal reminiscences of civil war days.
