SPENCE Richard Thomas Spence, age 83, of Dubois, Wyoming, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2008 in Limon, Colorado. Richard was born May 12, 1925 in Columbus, Ohio to John Halva and Starr (Whitman) Spence. Richard graduated in 1943 from Worthington High School in Columbus, Ohio. After discharge from the United States Navy, he attended Ohio State University for one semester. Richard proudly served his country during World War II, enlisting on July 7, 1943 and honorably discharged on March 7, 1946. While in the service he served as a gunners mate on the second starboard turret on the USS Tennessee in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Richard married Doris Stillman on April 3, 1959 in Columbus Ohio. To this union three children were born. Richard was a Regional Sales Manager for Glidden Paint Company for 36 years, retiring in 1986. Following his retirement, he and Doris made their home in Dubois, Wyoming where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating in the Wyoming Mountains. He also enjoyed working with wood and tinkering in his shop. Richard was a proud member of the National Riflemen's Association. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother David Spence. Richard is survived by his wife, Doris Spence of Dubois, WY; two sons, Rick (Judy) Spence of Powell, OH from his previous marriage, Steve (Karis) Spence of Delaware, OH; two daughters, Kathy (John) Fox of Limon, CO, and Dianne Spence (Ian Hummel) of Columbus, OH. Also surviving are six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 30, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. at RODMAN FUNERAL SERVICE, 5464 N. High St., Columbus, OH. Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Rodman Funeral Service in Columbus, Ohio with Reverend Frank Hoover officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Limon, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Lincoln Community Hospital Hospice, P.O. Box 248, Hugo, CO 80821.
