TSAI Dr. Thomas T. F. Tsai, age 98, Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Shandong, China, attended Nankai High School in Tianjin, and received medical degree from St. John's University in Shanghai. Was one of the youngest surgical residents appointed at Central Hospital in Chunking during the Sino-Japanese war in the 1930's. Worked as medical quarantine officer for CNRRA, the Chinese counterpart to the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. Came to the U.S. in 1952 as a urology resident at Princeton, then worked as general surgeon at Stevens Clinic in Welch, West Virginia. In 1962 came to Columbus for training in psychiatry at the Ohio State Hospital. Built an active clinical psychiatric practice, serving patients from all over Ohio for 30 years. Was one of the first area psychiatrists to use electro-shock and group therapy treatments. Loving and beloved husband and father, enthusiastic raconteur, talented photographer and devoted elder of Indianola Presbyterian Church. Pre-deceased by parents, Zi Sheng Tsai and Guang Xi Zhao; wife, Shaling; son, Leonard; daughter, Loretta Shih; brother, Dr. M. F. Tsai; and sister, You Fang Chu. Survived by his children: son-in-law, Peter Shih of San Diego; daughter-in-law, Rosa A. Tsai of New Orleans; daughter, Sheila and husband, Greg Whincup of Sooke, British Columbia; and son, Dr. David Tsai and wife Lynda of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Theodore, Mark, William, Thomas, Brandon, Jilliane, and Ellen; great-grandchildren, Adam, Isaac, Audrey, and Ethan. The family is grateful for the kind care he received from long-time family friend Priscilla Lin, and a team of care aides. Family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday, July 15th at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, 515 High St., Worthington, where funeral service will be held 10 AM Saturday. Rev. Skip Jackson officiating. Interment at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Family will also be at Dr. Tsai's home to receive visitors on Saturday afternoon from 2-5pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dr. Tsai's memory to a charity of choice.
