Woodruff Dr. Samuel "Skip" Amos Woodruff, Jr., died June 14, 2015 at The Sanctuary at Tuttle Crossing in Dublin, OH after a long illness. He was 74. Skip was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. Skip was born March 18, 1941 in Elizabethton, TN to Samuel Amos Woodruff, Sr. and Melba (Daley) Woodruff, as the oldest of three children. The family moved to Columbus, OH in the mid-1940s, where he would live the rest of his life committed to his family, church, and community. A natural leader, Skip approached all things with grace, determination, and love of life. He became an Eagle Scout at age 17. As a young man, he traveled to Europe with his mother, a foreign language professor at The Ohio State University, numerous times. There he learned to love France and the French culture, and furthered some of his Scouting adventures. Skip was a proud graduate of University School in 1959, where he was a star athlete, lead performer in the school's theater program, and student body president. He married Susan ("Sudie") Davis, his high school sweetheart, on September 7, 1963. He went on to graduate from The Ohio State University's College of Dentistry in 1967. Skip and Sudie worked together for 48 years, establishing a successful dental practice in Worthington, OH. In 1975, he was awarded "Boss of the Year" award from The Columbus Dental Assistant's Society, and his practice was awarded the Green Jersey Award for outstanding business development from Mercer Advisors in 2008. Skip's interests were numerous and varied. He was a Scout Leader at Worthington United Methodist Church in the 1970s, President of the Clintonville Academy Parents' Association in the mid-80s and was a founding member of central Ohio's Grandparents Living Theater group in 1989. He earned his private pilot's license, and tried sky-diving, spelunking, and repelling. He loved his 1978 Suzuki motorcycle and was a big fan of OSU basketball and football. He was passionate about watching the Tour De France every year. He was a member of the Ohio River Valley Airedale Terrier Club, and was instrumental in developing the Hunting/Working Committee for the club. He enjoyed sailing, and was a lifetime member of the Columbus chapter of the United States Sail & Power Squadron. He served this organization in a number of leadership positions, including local chapter Commander, District 29 Commander, and the Chairman of the National Environmental Committee. He taught several classes in safe boating, weather, and leadership. Skip also served as President of the Alumni Association of University School from 1992 until the present. Skip was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a devoted choir member at St. Andrew Catholic Church. He loved to spend time "up north" in the north woods of Wisconsin, with his wife, children, and grandchildren and especially with his great friend, Brad Mitchell on their never-ending quest for the biggest musky in Catfish Lake. Skip loved his family deeply and his friendships lasted a lifetime. Everyone who knew him loved him. He will be greatly missed by his family, many friends, and patients. Skip is survived by his devoted wife of almost 52 years, Sudie Davis Woodruff; his children, Sarah (Mark) Obermiller of Huntersville, NC, and Marie (Rob) Chiller of Cincinnati, OH; his beloved grandchildren, Libby (age 12), Mollie (age 10), and Dominic (age 6) Obermiller; his sister, Steffanie (John) Haueisen of Worthington, OH; brother in law, Hugh (Cheryl) Davis of Dublin, OH; niece, Kristen (Jesse) Kmiec of Columbus, OH; nephew, Scott (Jenny) Davis of Naples, FL; great-nephew, Ash Kmiec and great-nieces, Neveah and Madison Davis; numerous in-laws and many, many lifelong friends.
