James (Jim) Gobey Young, age 81, passed away on June 8, 2017 in Dublin, Ohio. He was born in Logan, Ohio to Leona and James L. Young. Jim’s upbringing in small town Logan instilled wholesome and lasting values such as serving your neighbor with love and being a friend to all. He was a graduate of the School of Business at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Shortly after graduation he served in the army and was later called back to active duty during the Berlin Crisis. Jim worked for Allstate Insurance for 41 years and as a consultant to the Ohio Department of Insurance for 18 years. He served for several years on the Board of Directors of the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) organization and was appointed to be the Regional Vice President for the Midwest region. He also served as the organization’s Chairman of the Education and Curriculum Committees. Additionally, Jim was appointed by the state of Ohio to the Licensing Exam Review Board. Perhaps his favorite occupational activity was preparing students to take the CPCU exam by passing on his wisdom with a good dose of Gobey humor. Service to his community was one of Jim’s core values. He lived that value by serving Worthington United Methodist Church and engaging in extensive volunteer work with the Worthington Kiwanis Chapter. In addition, Jim was involved with a local drug and alcohol abuse prevention program, as well as working with Meals on Wheels for several years. Even more prominent than Jim’s formal service to the community was his never-ending expression of kindness and love in the world. Jim never met a stranger. He was a prolific storyteller who spread laughter and joy to all who crossed his path. He was a consistent doer of good deeds, both small and large. Jim’s genuine and generous spirit profoundly touched the lives of countless people. He will be sorely missed. He is survived by his cherished wife Marilyn after 59 years of marriage in addition to their children Jim (Teresa), Lisa (Dan), Sharon (Peter), and two beloved grandchildren Jackie and Lona. Jim is also survived by his sister Nan Murphy of Pasadena, California and is pre-deceased by his sister Audrey Thorburn of Zanesville, Ohio. Family will greet friends and relatives from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Rutherford Corbin Funeral Home in Worthington with a Memorial Service to follow at 1:00 pm on Tuesday June 20. A private internment will follow. Donations can be made in Jim’s name to the Lam Foundation.
