Robert Vernon Ault, age 99, a longtime resident of Urbana, Ohio, passed away on August 9, 2017, at Wesley Glen in Columbus, Ohio. He was born December, 4,1917, in Columbus, OH, son of Charles and Jessie Ault. Robert was preceded in death by his wife Isabel, and his siblings, Kenneth, Harlan, Keith, and Geraldine. He is survived by, his four children, their spouses: Amy Sutherland, Lisa (Richard) Ault-Janosko, Andrew (Jean) Ault, Emily (Tim) Kelly and his six grandchildren: Chase and Kaleigh Sutherland, Derek and Devon Ault and Lindsay and Nicholas Kelly. Robert spent his childhood growing up in Columbus and New Albany Ohio. During his high school years his family moved to Lovington, New Mexico. After graduating, Robert traveled the country working at various jobs, including the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Robert joined the Army in 1941 and served his country fighting in Australia and the South Pacific. After WWII, Robert attended The Ohio State University School of Optometry. While attending college, Robert met and married, Isabel Elizabeth Aichholz, of Attica Ohio. In 1950 Robert and Isabel moved to Urbana, Ohio, where he was a practicing optometrist from 1951 to 1985. They raised their family and lived in Urbana for over 60 years. Robert and Isabel moved into assisted living in Columbus, Ohio in 2014. Robert will be remembered for his "wandering spirit", namely his love to explore his surroundings and the open road. Every summer he packed up the station wagon and took his family on an adventurous vacation, always traveling by way of the scenic back roads. At age 70 he took up motorcycle riding as a way to see the country side! To Isabel's dismay, Robert was a "collector". You name it and he had it, either in his garage or basement. Around the house Robert was a great handyman and an avid vegetable gardener. Robert was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, serving in the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the bowling team and organized the church Bingo games. He was also an advisor for his son Andy's 4-H Electronics Club. He and his friend, Tom Crowley, spent many a night star gazing and discussing science. Most importantly, Robert was a caring father and a loving, devoted husband to his wife, Isabel, for 69 years. Visitation is Monday August 14, 5-7pm. Funeral is Tuesday August 15th at 11:00am at Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 N. High St. Worthington, Ohio, followed by graveside service at Walnut Grove Cemetery, 5561 Milton Ave, Worthington, Ohio.
