This photograph shows six computers in a row for public use at the Northwest Library. The two computers on the left are catalog computers. Tables and chairs are visible in the foreground and a photocopy machine can be seen at the left of the photograph. The wall above the computers is decorated for the Summer Reading Program with a sign that reads "Escape to Book Island" and the dates "June 10 - Aug. 5."

Northwest Library opened on April 16, 1996, and the library system’s summer reading program and circulation statistics increased dramatically in that year. In June 1996, more than 80,000 items were circulated at the Northwest Library alone, and total circulation for the library system as a whole increased 21 percent over June 1995. And by June 1996, 3500 children had signed up for the summer reading program, compared to 3010 the year before.
