Slate Hill school began as a one room log cabin, serving children in the Flint area. A new two-room school was built about 1870. It had two rooms. Grades one through four were taught in the room on the right side. Grades five through eight were taught in the room on the left. Across the back of the building was a large cloak room. The school was named Slate Hill after the mineral deposits in the area. Students drank from a bucket at the front entrance using a dipper, and outhouses were provided at the rear of the building. Students would sled on the hill behind the school.
Slate Hill School was closed in 1926 when Flint School was built at the corner of Flint and Park Roads. The original Slate Hill school has been a residence since 1947. The present Slate Hill Elementary School School at 7625 Alta View Blvd. was named to reflect the history of the area.
