The administration of mild electric shocks for medical purposes dates to the late 18th century. Edward Nairne was first to patent an electricalmedical device in 1782. Early machines were superseded by those using induction coils and later current electricity. Elecro-stimulus therapy can be highly controversial. Electro Stimulus Therapy is sometimes used for treatment of severely depressed patients that do not respond to medication.
