The Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 began at the end of May, following the police killing of George Floyd along with a history of systemic racism and police brutality against Black people. Floyd died on May 25, 2020 in Minneapolis after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground under a policeman's knee. While he was pinned to the ground, Floyd repeatedly told officers "I can't breathe," which became a rallying cry for the protest movement following his murder. Tens of millions of people in cities across the United States and world participated in the protests. A July 3, 2020 article in "The New York Times" estimated that the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 may be the largest movement in United States history.
