The club was formed in the summer of 1937 as the "Personality Club" with the goal of bringing new opportunities for social activities to students. The focus was on personality development, including stimulation of thought pertaining to social problems, strengthening personalities, overcoming shyness, and eliminating class distinctions. Members of the club, along with volunteers had teas for small groups of high school girls, where the girls served as hostess, as well as guest. Other activities during early years included ballroom dance lessons for boys and girls.
