Worthington High School girls dressed in gym bloomers are pictured in front of a basketball hoop in this photograph. One of the girls holds a basketball labeled WHS '12. Basketball was invented in Massachusetts in 1891 by a Canadian, James Naismith. Initially soccer balls were used to play the game. Larger balls specifically made to play basketball were introduced in 1894. Peach baskets were originally used for hoops, along with backboards such as the one pictured here. Basketball was an extremely popular sport, especially for women. Collegiate women's teams played as early as 1896, and the sport debuted in the 1936 Olympics.
