This scrip note was issued by Scioto Company Proprietor, Ezra Griswold. Hard currency, such as gold coinage, was the preferred method of exchange, but cash was scarce on the frontier. In 1815, specie payment was suspended by eastern banks. Thus cash was in short supply on the frontier. Local banks and local businessmen like the Griswolds would issue their own paper currency called 'shinplasters" in small denominations. They were usually for small amounts, and helped keep local economies alive, as did the practice of barter.
