Biographical sketch
Born in Rose Hill, Mississippi in 1919, Herbert McGee moved to Columbus in 1941. He was drafted into the Army for World War II, and attended basic training at Camp Wheeler in Georgia and realistic training at Fort Huachuca in Arizona.
McGee served his country in combat from 1942-1946 as part of the 93rd Infantry, 25th Regiment, receiving an honorable discharge on January 5, 1946. His deployment took him to the Solomon Islands in the Southwest Pacific Ocean, where he served on Green Island, New Guinea, Morotai, Guadalcanal and Bougainville. For his service, McGee was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
After the war, he remained active in veteran affairs, becoming a member of Worthington’s American Legion Leasure-Blackston Post 239. McGee was honored twice as Grand Marshal of the Worthington Memorial Day Parade.
