Background
This black-and-white portrait features Lester W. Griffith (1898–1979) outdoors in a three-quarter profile wearing his American Legion hat. Griffith was a World War I veteran and the first commander of the American Legion Leasure-Blackston Post 239 in Worthington, Ohio. Serving from 1919 to 1920, Griffith helped establish the early leadership and community presence of the newly formed post at 700 Morning Street.
Beyond his military service, Griffith built a long career as a dentist in Columbus, practicing at 15th and High Streets after graduating from the Ohio State University School of Dentistry. Active in civic life, he was a life member and former director of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, a member of the Last Mans Club, and a three-time club champion at Brookside Country Club. His obituary notes his deep community ties, his service in World War I, and his dedication to public and professional organizations.
Griffith passed away on April 13, 1979, at the age of 80.
