GILBERT Evelyn Conkle Gilbert, age 98, of Worthington, July 5, 2000. Born in Bellevue, Oh., August 28, 1901. Preceded in death by parents Joseph A. and Elizabeth Slife Conkle and brothers Herbert, Mervin and William Conkle. Graduate of Worthington High School, The Ohio State University and received an M.A. degree from Western Reserve University. Taught 34 years at Collinwood High School, Cleveland, Oh. and was active in the teachers union. Married John G. Gilbert, Worthington, Oh. in 1958. She chose to stay near her step-son, Richard and his family after John's death in 1960. Honorary life member of Worthington Historical Society (Study Group III), Worthington Women's Club, Women's Service Board of Grant Hospital (Shield II). Member OSU Alumni Association, co-chair 50th and 60th reunions of class of 1923. Served on board of Alumnae Scholarship House at OSU. Instrumental in starting the Worthington Historical Society newsletter, "The Intelligencer". Helped found the Worthington High School 30 Year Club. Survived by step-son, Richard (Linda) Gilbert; step-daughter and friend, Frances Gilbert; beloved grandchildren, Anne, John (Nancy), Jane and Adam (Camille). She was "GG" to Molly, Natalie and Nathan, who brightened her later years beyond telling. Also survived by niece, Karen Little; great-nieces, Sarah Forney and Mary Pavek and their children, niece, Mary Sue Stanley; great-nieces, Anne and Amy; great-nephew, Jason and his son; nephew, Joseph. Preceded in death by nephew James Conkle and survived by his wife, Kay and daughter, Bonnie Jean; sister-in-law, Mary Pinney Conkle. She will be sorely missed by family, friends and neighbors who admired and supported her as she lived alone and drove her car until she was 98. Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2000 at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 515 High St., Worthington. Rev. Thomas Timmons officiating. Family will receive friends Sunday 2-5 p.m. and 1 hour prior to service on Monday. Burial Walnut Grove Cemetery.
