Worthington High School girls are pictured in front of a basketball hoop with a female faculty member. They are dressed in gym bloomers. The girl in the center holds a basketball labeled WHS '12. Basketball was invented by a Canadian, James Naismith, in Massachusetts in 1891. Soccer balls were used to play the game until larger balls were introduced in 1894. Peach baskets were originally used for hoops, along with backboards such as the one pictured here.
Basketball was extremely popular, especially for women. Collegiate women's teams played as early as 1896, and the sport debuted in the 1936 Olympics.
