Librarian Ann Pechacek is pictured here with participants at the Open Mic @ Your Library program, held at the Old Worthington Library on April 29, 2010. The program was the culmination of the Worthington Libraries' Eighth Annual Teen Poetry and Short Story Competition, which was held that month. The library received 45 entries from teens throughout the area, and even an entry from out of the country. Local authors and teachers served as judges for the program, and the open mic event was held to announce the winners and to celebrate the creativity of the teens, who read their contributions aloud for the audience. Thirty-two people attended the event.

Ann Pechacek, who organized the competition and open mic program, is pictured eighth from the left, receiving rabbit ears from an attendee. Ann worked at Worthington Libraries for 20 years, first as a teen librarian and then as a lead librarian. During her time at the library, she served as a friend and mentor to countless teens, sharing with them her passion for reading. In addition to her many programs and booktalks at the library, Ann served on prestigious national book award committees: the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature, and the William C. Morris YA Debut Award. She was born in Muskogee, OK, and grew up in Tahlequah, OK, where she graduated high school. She continued her education at the University of Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Alaska in Anchorage. She received her Master's in Library Science from the University of Southern Mississippi.
